Methodology

How this calculator works

P is the original principal, i is the monthly interest rate, and n is the number of monthly payments. Each month, interest is calculated on the outstanding balance; the rest of the EMI reduces principal. At 0% interest, the principal is divided equally across all months.

EMI = P × i × (1 + i)ⁿ ÷ ((1 + i)ⁿ − 1)

Assumptions

  • The interest rate remains unchanged for the full tenure.
  • Payments are monthly and made at the end of each period.
  • The final payment is adjusted for any paise-level rounding balance.
  • Processing fees, insurance, taxes, penalties and prepayments are excluded.

Questions, answered

Frequently asked questions

What does EMI include?

An EMI contains both interest for the month and a principal repayment. Early payments usually contain more interest because the outstanding balance is higher.

Will my bank's EMI be exactly the same?

It should be close when the assumptions match, but lender day-count rules, rounding, fees, insurance and payment dates can cause differences.

What happens if the interest rate is zero?

The calculator divides the principal equally across the selected number of months, with no interest charge.

Does a longer tenure reduce cost?

A longer tenure usually lowers the monthly EMI but increases the total interest paid, assuming the same rate.
